My Top 3 Favorite Juice Cleanses

There are so many benefits to doing a juice cleanse! We take our cars for an oil change regularly, right?  I like to think of a juice cleanse as doing the same thing with my body.  Every now and then, we NEED to clean everything out.  A juice cleanse isn’t just for fast food addicts, it's for everyone.  We typically eat 3 meals a day with about 3 snacks.  It takes our bodies 18 hours to digest just one meal, which means that our digestive systems are working 24/7.  When you do a juice cleanse, you are giving your digestive system a much needed break! Typically, a juice cleanse is when you drink 6 fresh fruit and vegetable juices throughout the day.  I recommend that each juice is about 12-16 ounces, depending on the person.  A few of the benefits are: increased energy, regulated colon, repaired liver, better sleep, radiant complextion and hair, mental clarity, elimination of toxins, and weight loss.. just to name a few!

Juicing can get expensive so purchase produce yourself and make your own.  Fresh juice is going to be the least expensive way to go about doing a juice cleanse.  However, we don't always have time for that.  I have tried a few different juice cleanses and these are my top 3 favorite juice cleanse that you can purchase pre-made!

I can't say enough good things about this cleanse! On the website, you will read that Kimberly's cleanse is, "more than just a typical cleanse" which is so true!  Kimberly has everything down to a science and has carefully planned out each drink to "maximize the cleanse experience." This cleanse offers a variety of options from a one day cleanse, to a seven day cleanse, and everything in between.  You can also choose between a beginner level 1 or a master level 2 cleanse.  This cleanse starts and ends with a smoothie, which is one reason why I love this cleanse so much.  The smoothies keep you full and help push everything out of your system.  Each day you are given a total of 8 products all of which taste delicious! Glow Bio uses all organic produce in their cleanse and they send very thorough instructions which I found helpful!  The best thing about this particular cleanse is that it's easy.  You will not only feel a change in your body, but you will notice a difference too!  For more information on this cleanse or to order one for yourself, Click HERE.http://www.myglowbio.com

I stumbled across this juice bar while I was out of town in Phoenix, Arizona and I loved it! It's the cutest juice bar I have ever been to and they offer some really great products.  I ordered a 5 day juice cleanse from Nekter Juice Cleanse which I liked a lot.  This cleanse provides you with 6 products a day... all juices.  The last juice is a mix of cashew milk, vanilla bean, and cinnamon, which is a nice change and something to look forward to at the end of each day.  You also get a tasty lemonade in this cleanse that is to die for!  For more information on this cleanse or to order one for yourself, Click HERE. https://www.nekterjuicebar.com

#3 Squeezed Juice Bar Cleanse

I love going to squeezed in Albuquerque, New Mexico!  It's by far my favorite juice bar in town and they offer some really delicious recipes! There isn't anything too fancy about this cleanse like there is with the first two, but I still enjoy this cleanse a lot.  You are given 6 juices per day.  All 6 are fruit and vegetable juices.  The nice thing about this cleanse (for those who live in abq) is that you do not have to pay for shipping!  5 of the 6 juices are VERY tasty... almost too good to be true.  You will get a juice in your cleanse called super juice which in my opinion can be a little rough.  Some people love it, but it's not my cup of tea.  You can also customize your order if you don't like certain juices.  My favorite cold pressed juices from squeezed are replenish, liquid sunshine, sweet burn, fatigue fighter, green machine, and thrive! All of those juices get five stars in my book! For the address to Squeezed and for more information on their cleanse, Click HERE http://www.squeezedjuices.com

Other places to purchase juice on the go.
These are the juices that I give the ok to.  I always try and purchase juice as organic and fresh as possible.  Be careful when buying juice because the 100% juice label doesn't mean anything.  There is a difference between a marketing label and the ingredient list.  Read the ingredients on the label and if it says concentrated.. put it back!

The worst "juice" to buy is:
v8
Naked Juice
Zico
Odwalla
POM
Simple Orange
Bolthouse Farms
Tropicana
Ocean Spray
Minute Maid
Del Monte
Welch's

The best juice to buy:
Fresh Juice from a local juice bar
Whole Foods sells fresh cold press juice that they make in stores.  I have found their cold press juice to be the least expensive.  They offer a variety of juices.
Suja Juice (Health Food Stores, Sprouts, Whole Foods)
Suja Elements (Health Food Stores, Sprouts, Whole Foods)
Trader Joe's Cold Press Juice (Trader Joe's)

If you are new to juicing, I highly recommend starting off SLOW.  Start swapping out one meal or one snack a day with a juice.  Choose recipes that you will enjoy... if you hate vegetables, you won't be able to jump into a straight veggie juice right away.  If you are interest in purchasing a juicer, click HERE for the list of juicers I recommend.

If you need recipes for your own juice cleanse, click HERE for a list of 50+ Juice Recipes.

Since I started juicing, I have lost a total of 40 lbs and have never been healthier in my entire life! If you are skeptical... just give it a try! What do you have to lose? When you feel good on the inside, you look good on the outside, which is why I always say, "When you sparkle on the inside, you radiate on the outside!"

Keep Sparkling,
xoxo

Super Green Juice Detox

Super Green Juice Detox

Hey guys! Sorry I haven't posted a blog in awhile... I have been out of town for several days! With that being said, I am in need of doing a major detox (One too many "cheat" meals in Texas)  and I thought I would share my three day detox with you all.  It's all natural, all fresh juice, and ALL GREEN.

When doing a detox I like to drink a 15oz juice every two hours.  In between drinking fresh homemade juices I'll either drink water, detox water, or green tea, all of which help with detoxing process.

Also, just a little tip that will rock your juicing world... add Chia seeds, sparkling water, or coconut water to just about any juice recipe for an extra little kick and it will change the juicing game for you!

Time to get Green in 2014 ;)

DETOX WATER RECIPES
#1 Water, Lemon, Aloe Vera Juice
#2 Lemon, Cucumber, Mint
#3 Strawberries, Cinnamon, Lime
#4 Juiced Ginger and Lemon mixed with water
#5 Raspberries, lemon
#6 Blackberries, Blueberries, Lemon
Excluding #4 the way to make all of these detox waters is to slice up the fruit, and add it to a pitcher, mason jars, or any type of container full of water.  Let the fruit infuse over night and then the next day you have yourself some delicious detox water!

Some of you may be wondering, "Whats so special about emerald colored juices anyways?"
-If you hate vegetables like myself, it's a whole lot easier to down a class of veggies masked by the taste of delicious fruit.  Sometimes one apple is sweet enough to make all those veggies taste great!
-You would never sit down and eat a full plate of cucumber, celery, apples, lemons, spinach, and kale.  Drinking a juice not only saves you time but it also saves some space in your belly.
-We need the detoxification.  That's pretty self explanatory.
-Our digestive system needs a break every now and then!

I always say... If I can do it, you can do it :)

15 Ways to Use the Leftover Pulp from your Juicer!

If you are anything like me, one of the not so great parts about juicing is feeling like you waste so much. (and after spending a fortune on fresh produce this thought can be very aggravating... I know) Well, here are a few ways you can use all of the pulp from your juicer!

1.  Freeze it and save it for later use! It may lose some of the nutrient value by sticking it in the freezer however, you will still have a significant amount of fiber left in pulp!  (Place fruit and Veggie pulp in separate containers)

2.  Fruit pulp can be used to add a little kick to your smoothies, muffins, bread, cookies, bread, granola bars, pie or cobblers. You can blend it up or cook it!

3.  Meat Loaf:  Add some fresh vegetable pulp to your meat loaf to make for a healthier and more delicious meal! (Use ground turkey to make it even more healthy)

4.  Omelets:  Add some veggies to your eggs with fresh vegetable pulp... so good!

5.  Soups:  Try making a vegetable soup with fresh juice and add some pulp for flavor and texture

6.  Lasagna:  There are some REALLY good spaghetti squash recipes out there, add some fresh veggie pulp for even more flavor with a healthy lasagna!

7.  Put it back into your garden:  If you have a garden you can use pulp as fertilizer or maybe you don't want to cook with the extra pulp,  just throw it anywhere in your backyard and let the earth do it's thing with it.  Might as well not waste it!

8.  Bulk your burgers up with some vegetable pulp.

9.  For those with young kids:  You can sneak some of pulp into some everyday food.  For example, take some traditional Mac&Cheese and add some spinach, tomato, or kale pulp into their food and BAM, kids are gettin' more veggies!

10.  DIY Salad Dressings:  With some fresh pulp, a little olive oil, and some vinegar you have your own homemade (and healthy) dressing!

11.  Hummus:  Ok, I have had an obsession with hummus lately.  I just recently made my own and added in some fresh vegetable pulp and it was SO GOOD! A must try!

12.  "Tea":  Add some fruit pulp to some hot water, add a pinch of cinnamon, let it set and then run thru a strainer.

13.  Pancakes:  Add some flavor and moister to some oatmeal pancakes!

14.  You can use leftover pulp to make some homemade scrubs and face masks

15.  You can dehydrate the pulp and make crackers with it.

This weekend I made muffins with my leftover pulp.  Here is the recipe for

Orange Nut Muffins
2 cups of gluten free flour
3 tablespoons of honey
3 teaspoons of baking powder
1/2 teaspoon of salt
1 cup of fresh juiced orange juice
3 tablespoons of coconut oil
3 tablespoons of orange pulp
2 egg whites
1/4 cup of chopped nuts (pecan, macadamia, or walnuts)
Preheat oven to 400.  Mix everything together and then bake for 15-18 minutes at 400!

Peel Oranges

Juice Oranges

Save the pulp

Put your gluten free flour in a bowl

Add Honey
 Add baking soda
 Add  Fresh OJ
 Then your coconut oil
 Two egg whites
I crack my egg whites in a separate bowl
 Add em' in
Chop up whatever nuts you decided to use and add them in!
Stir Everything together until there are little to no clumps

Bake for 15-18 minutes on 400 and then these babies are done!

I also made some "Carrot Cake" muffins with fresh pulp that were TO DIE FOR!

Carrot Cake Muffins

3 cups of gluten free flour
1 tablespoon of baking soda
3 1/2 cups of carrot pulp
1 cup of pineapple pulp
1 cup of honey
4 tablespoons of cinnamon
1 teaspoon of nutmeg
6 egg whites
1 cup of coconut oil
1 1/2 cups of chopped walnuts

preheat oven to 350.  Mix all ingredients together.  Bake for 45 minutes!

Enjoy!!!

A Little Q&A Time...

Happy Monday :)
I hope you were able to start kick your week with some new healthy juices!

I have received such a great response from everyone who has been reading the blog (Woo Hoo) !!!  I am loving the flood of messages I am getting everyday from everyone asking about juicing, how to juice, for advice, or simply just a message saying "You have inspired me and I am starting juicing tomorrow!" All which leads me to my next topic which is a little Q&A.  I'm sure a lot of you have some of the same questions so hopefully this helps!

1. Do I need to peel oranges?
The answer is yes.  All fruits and vegetables that have likewise peels need to be skinned before going through the juicer.  These types of peels will damage the strainer and you will not be able to use your juicer anymore (which after purchasing one is the last thing you want to do).  Fruits such as apples, cucumbers, and pears are perfectly fine to go through the juicer without being skinned prior to juicing.  There should be a list in your juicing manual that has a more detailed list of what can and cant go through the strainer.

2. Can I use frozen fruit?
You cannot use frozen fruit with your juicer.  The juicer will only liquidize fresh fruits.  Using frozen fruits can be damaging to the strainer.  Frozen fruits are something you would use for a smoothie when you are blending, not juicing

3. Do you buy pre-cut fruit?
My answer to this is sometimes I do, but I try to stay away from it.  If you have already started making juices then you know how time consuming it can be.  When I know I am going to have an extremely busy week, then I will buy pre-cut fruit and bagged Kale/Spinach just because it saves me some more time but I really try not to because it's more expensive.

4. Do you use juice as a meal replacement?
Typically I do.  When I first started to replace a few meals with juice, I didn't have any issues doing so.  I didn't feel like I was starving, weak, or deprived. (Everyone is different so listen and pay attention to how your body is feeling) When I replace a meal with juice I usually drink about 16oz but if I feel like I need more, Ill drink more! Juice can be made to complement a meal as well! You get so many more nutrients by drinking fresh, homemade juice that I highly recommend drinking at least one juice a day!

5.  Can I blend the recipes you post and will I physically get the same results as you if I blend instead of juice?

Ok, so to the first part of that question... Yes you can blend the recipes I post in a blender, however they wont taste the same as a juice made with a juicer.  I have tried the same exact recipe in my juicer and in a blender and they tasted VERY different! Also, the recipes I post are specifically for juicing therefore if you do decide to blend you will need a lot less produce.
As far as what your results will be by doing a "blending" detox, I am unsure.  During my journey to losing 20lbs I never once blended a smoothie, I only used a juice extractor.  I rarely blend anymore because I am pleased with how the juice taste, so now it's hard to go back to blending.  With that being said, there are a ton of benefits from blending and it's still a healthy alternative to most typical diets.

6.  Do I have to use one of those ridiculously expensive juicers?

Not at all!  I have a few friends who just recently purchased juicers from Wal-Mart that were under 50 dollars! I have tried these juicers out and the end product turns out the exact same.  The biggest difference I saw was the Breville Juicer (my juicer) has a 3" inch feed tube that's large enough for many whole fruits.  With the Black and Decker juicer you really have to cut up all of the fruit into pretty small pieces, but... it's a lot less expensive!  The Black and Decker juicer is a good "starter" juicer.

A few other differences between the two juicers are the Breville Juice extractor has 5 different speeds you can juice at, it has a special spout that separates the froth from the juice when pouring into your jars, the pitcher is bigger, and the trash bin is bigger as well.

Here is a picture of the Black and Decker Juice Extractor...

7.  What juicer do I use?
I use The Juice Fountain Multi-Speed Breville Juicer and here is a picture of that one...

8.  When the recipe calls  for pineapple, do you use the entire thing?
After cutting the rind off, yes you use the entire thing including the center.  It will go through the juicer!

 9.  Do you use organic fruit and vegetables?
I try to as much as possible.  I also like to buy my fruit and veggies from our farmers market to support local business! Buying organic is a little bit more expensive however when we are juicing and detoxing we are trying to "cleanse" our bodies of all the chemicals we usually put in them.  Non-Organic produced is typically filled with pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers, additives, radiation, genetic modification, and preservatives all which are extremely harmful to our bodies.  If you have some free time one night I recommend sitting down and and reading in more detail about the list above.

10.  Is it better to make one juice at a time or several at a time?

It is always best to drink juice as fresh as possible.  When we are juicing we are breaking open the cell walls of the produce causing the produce to become very sensitive to air and light.  When the produce is exposed to air, it loses some of it's nutrients.  I wrote more in detail about this in my post titled "DETOXING"

11. I get SUPER hungry and I am afraid I wont be able to juice.
I as well have a huge appetite. I mean, like HUGE...When I drink my juices I am completely satisfied and feel full.  I never deprive myself... If I am hungry then I just drink more juice.  I never limit myself to a certain amount and I just try and stick to a ballpark range of 12-20oz.  Like I always say, start off slow! If you're afraid you'll get hungry then only try substituting breakfast for awhile and then try and replace other meals.

-------> If you want to read more about Juicing vs. Blending check out my post titled "The Facts".

Just a little reminder if you started a cleanse and it didn't last all day or maybe you started juicing and got frustrated... Your health is worth it! And if you are doing this to lose weight, don't give up just because you didn't see results after the first day(although I know we all hope, dream, and pray for that) This is something that will take TIME.  Time getting use to, time to adjust, and time to see change!

And I just wanted to share a few of the sweet messages I've received :)

"So I just bought a juicer and I have been reading your blog religiously and I love it! You have such a positive attitude that is so contagious haha I know that sounds cheesy but it's true!

"I just wanted to say you are an inspiration! I have read your blog and bought a juicer.. Im excited to start the juicing journey! Lol so thanks for being so detailed and motivating! Good luck with everything and thanks again for sharing!"

"Hi! I know you really don't know me, but wanted to tell you that my daughter and I are gonna start this juicing lifestyle! So excited! Her in Tempe me here in Albuquerque! Thanks for the recipes.. Will follow your blog! You are a beautiful young lady inside and out!"

"Just wanted to say your blog was super inspiring and I watched that documentary and I'm doing a juice fast for 30 days. I just completed my first day today. I feel great. Thank you for your blog."

Thank you all SO much for giving me something to be so excited about and proud of!
Stay tuned for my non-juicing grocery list later this week...
Well, Until Next time

Detoxing

If I can do it... You can do it!

Down 20lbs, 26 inches, and went from a size 4 to a size 0!

Happy Monday!

I hope you all are starting off your week healthy and productive!  I just got back into ABQ after being out of town for 11 days (and binge pageant eating on top of that) So I am very happy to be home and ready to reboot my system with a 3 day cleanse which I am going to talk about today!

I have received a lot of questions about preparing juice & letting it sit in the refrigerator so I am going to touch on that quickly....

There is nothing better than FRESH juice, there is no denying that!  When we are juicing, we are breaking down and exposing the cell walls of the produce (this is what makes juicing so AMAZING and it's where all the benefits come from!)  When the cell walls become exposed we are making the produce very sensitive to light, air, heat etc.  Therefore, for MAXIMUM benefits drinking juice right away is best.  I do not have time to whip out my juicer 5 times a day and make fresh juice for every meal so I prepare most of my juices in advance.  I have noticed that citrus type foods tend to last a lot longer than other produce such as an apple which brown quickly.  I like to add extra lemon to whatever juices I am storing as well.  If you are not drinking your juice immediately, I recommend putting it in the refrigerator ASAP.  I have heard of some people freezing their juices and then when they are ready to drink them a few days after preparing them, they take the juice out of the freezer and drink as soon as its thawed.  I personally have not tried this yet but it sounds like a fantastic idea.  I also recommend storing juice in mason jars because the seal is air tight and the glass is better than plastic(...my own personal opinion and preference)

I was reading some more about juicing today and I wanted to share with you all a list of Health Benefits from Juicing I came across that I felt really hit home with my own personal experience. Literally every bullet-point I was shaking my head and thinking, "Yep.. It does do that!"

Here it is!
  • Weight Loss
  • Immunity Booster
  • Better Digestion
  • Better Sleep
  • Decrease in Allergies
  • Balance in Skin Conditions
  • Healthier Hair
  • Improved Nail Strength
  • Decrease in Body Odor
  • Increase in Energy
  • Decrease in Medication
  • Mental, Emotional, and Spiritual Health

 3 DAY DETOX

Tomorrow I am starting a 3 day detox! After competing in Miss NM USA and being out of town for 11 days (and not caring what went into my mouth for the remainder of that trip) my body is SCREAMING for a detox.  And let me just say... the foods I thought I missed and had been fantasizing over for months were not nearly as "good" as I remembered them being and in fact I will drink juice over any of that yuck any day!!! Juice is SO delicious... I'm craving one as we speak!

So my idea of a "Detox" is drinking only juice for three days straight.  The BEST advice I can give is to start off SLOWWWWW!!!!! Try doing a juice detox for one day & then maybe a few days later try two days.  Just giving your body all those nutrients for a day will work wonders. It's an amazing feeling to start off slow and work your way to doing a full blown juicing detox but it's not a change that you or your body will like to make overnight. AND Unless you were blessed with taste buds that crave vegetables, do not try and make pure veggie juices with stuff you would never eat to begin with.  IT'S OK to use yummy produce with high carbs and/or sugar (OMG... did I just say ok to high carbs and sugar in one sentence?!) Yes... Yes I did! And if we're going to be really honest, I typically use WAY more fruits than vegetables on a daily basis when juicing and I lost 20 lbs and 26 inches doing just that.  So don't be afraid to try some delicious recipes that use mostly fruit! Your body will thank you regardless, and you will be wanting to frame the picture on your scale.  -never thought that would happen!

I typically like to drink one 16oz juice every two hours.  In between juices I like to drink 1/2-1 glass of water.  Water can be so boring so I like to jazz it up with some lemon, limes, strawberries, mint leaves, watermelon, cucumber, pineapple, or oranges.  If I am STARVING at any point of the day, I'll just drink another juice... I mean you're going all liquid for crying out loud... it's not going to hurt if you have an extra 16oz juice of FRESH, NATURAL produce.

Picture of the water that you would prepare the night before..

Starting tomorrow I will be posting about my detox, how I feel, and what it's doing to my body.  I look forward to sharing about how it's going!

REMINDER:  I am no health expert, I am not majoring in health education, I do not have any type license.  I do not know what works for anyone other than myself however I do know that juicing has had a huge and positive impact on my life and I am happy to share what its done for me.  If you have questions I HIGHLY recommend consulting your doctor before trying anything I have shared.

Looking forward to writing my next post already ;)
Hope you all enjoyed this one and if you have any questions feel free to leave a comment!

Welcome!

After competing in the Miss New Mexico USA pageant this past weekend, I have received a ton of messages asking about juicing and which plan I am on.  I never thought I would have messages in my inbox saying, "You have inspired me to start juicing and it is totally changing my physical fitness life!"  ...What?! Was that really in MY inbox?!  I am completely humbled by all of the support and totally inspired to share my "Juicing Journey" with you all.

I have ALWAYS wanted to start blog and have finally found my niche (woo hoo!)  And so it begins :) I will be sharing my success story with you all, my current journey with juicing, what personal barriers I have broken, what juicing can do for you,  all of the health benefits you receive from juicing, why it's EASY, how you can prepare your juice, and most importantly my all time FAV recipes! Juicing has completely changed my life and I will forever be grateful that during my journey to Miss New Mexico USA I came across a lifestyle that rebooted my health, improved my overall physical fitness, and something that I can actually maintain and ENJOY!

Excited to share more about juicing with you all later this week! If you are super excited and want to jump start those new year's resolutions with juicing I recommend watching the "Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead" documentary.  You can rent and or buy the documentary on iTunes.  Also, for those of you living in Albuquerque the DVD is sold at Squeezed Juice Bar off of Paseo Del Norte and San Pedro.  The address is 7900 San Pedro Dr NE #12 Albuquerque, NM.

& real quick... Here is my current all time FAVORITE recipe! (Juiced with a Breville Juicer)

Green Detox Juice
  • 5 stalks of Kale
  • 3 Apples
  • 1 Lemon
  • 1 Cucumber
  • Ginger Root (Ginger is strong so I recommend starting with a small amount and then add more depending on your personal preference)

I cannot WAIT to share more about juicing with you all but for now I'm off to enjoy a few more guilt-free snacks while watching the Pretty Little Liars marathon ;)

Until next time...

XOXO
