Becoming a Flight Attendant

Since embarking on this new journey, I've had several people ask me about my career as a flight attendant!  I figured I would share my story on how I even stumbled upon this gem of a life I'm now living.  I'm currently 26 and I feel like I've had quite a few "life experiences" already.  I worked in real estate for 5 years starting when I was only 19 years old, I have my degree in business marketing, I've been on a reality TV show,  I've been featured in national marketing campaigns, was Miss New Mexico World 2015, and I was Miss New Mexico USA 2017.  With all of that under my belt, it may come as a surprise when I say that becoming a flight attendant was BY FAR my most difficult endeavor.

I really can't pinpoint one specific thing that made me want to be a flight attendant.  Being a flight attendant was always something that was in the back of my mind growing up.  I traveled a lot with sports in high school and college, so I think just doing a decent amount of traveling really opened my eyes to making a career out of it.   In college specifically, when I was studying marketing, I really admired the company I now work for.  I knew for several years that one way or another I was going to work for this company.  What I didn't know however, was just how difficult it was going to be to land a job.

All in all, it took me two and a half years to a become flight attendant.  I repeat, TWO AND A HALF YEARS.  That is a heck of a lot of waiting!  I applied for the flight attendant position when they had an opening  in 2016.  I was so excited but then after months, and months, and months of not hearing a single word back, I figured I didn't get the job.  About 10 months after  I had applied, I moved to San Diego and got a job with a local TV station doing advertising and marketing.  I was just starting to get settled into a life out here when all of a sudden I got a voicemail saying, "Hello this is Bill and I was wondering if you were still interested in the flight attendant position you applied for?"  I thought it was a prank call!  For some reason, I ended up calling Bill back and sure enough, it was legit!  I said yes like I just received some elaborate marriage proposal!   I remember running around my apartment screaming with excitement!

After that phone call, I had to fill out some paperwork and wait a couple months for an over the phone interview.  I was so nervous for my first interview!  The first interview was pretty extensive.  It wasn't a breeze in the park by any means.  I had no idea if they liked me or not afterwards which usually isn't a good sign.  However a few weeks after that, I received a phone call saying that I was moving forward and to be on the look out for further instructions for the face to face interview.  Once again, I was left waiting.  I didn't hear anything for so long, I started to wonder if they forgot about me.  Finally, they called back and gave me a few days notice for a face to face interview in Dallas, Texas.

My interview in Dallas was a blast.  I'll never forget the feeling of walking into headquarters for the first time.  I felt like I had made it!  For some reason, I wasn't as nervous for the face to face interview.   I knew I had what it took to be a great flight attendant, and I knew how passionate I was about the brand.  I knew all I needed to do was be genuine.  I also truly believe that everything happens for a reason, so I was at peace knowing it would work out how it was suppose to.  They asked some pretty hard hitting questions, but I had prepared as much as possible and left feeling great! However... I didn't back hear right away, once again!

During the week of my 26th birthday, I received one of the best gifts!  I FINALLY got the word that I was HIRED for a dream job, with my dream company!!! It was contingent on me passing flight attendant training, but none the less, I got the job!

I like to think that this experience was a learning lesson for me.  Good things take TIME.  There is beauty in staying patient and staying hopeful.  I can't tell you how many times I could've lost hope, and honestly there were moments that I really wanted to but persistence, hard work, and dedication always pay off in the end.

This is just the beginning of my story.  It's actually a very small part of my journey to becoming a flight attendant but I just wanted to share it with you all because I know there are probably some people out there who are currently in my shoes, playing the waiting game!  Don't ever lose hope!

Miss USA Snapchat Takeover Recap

Hey Everyone!

I hope your week is off to a great start!  I can’t believe that in just 12 days I leave for Miss USA.  It’s kind of funny, at times it feels so surreal and at other times it hits me that this is actually happening!  My Miss USA Snapchat Takeover day was one of those days where all I could think about was the fact that I’m really representing New Mexico at Miss USA!

On my Snapchat takeover day, I ran around the city of Albuquerque for over 17 hours trying to film as much as I possibly could.  It was important to me that everyone watching on this worldwide platform got a glimpse of New Mexico.  I also wanted everyone to get to know me a little bit more.  Some of you have been following my journey for quite some time, however there are a lot of people out there who only know me at Miss New Mexico USA!   I had so much I wanted to share that 24 hours didn’t seem like enough time, but I made certain to take advantage of every minute!

I know there are a lot of people out there who don’t have Snapchat, so I thought it would be fun to do a little recap of my day!

I woke up at 4am.  I start off having technical difficulties signing into the official Miss USA snapchat account which was a little scary knowing that I had to be ready for the first activity at 6:00am.  Thankfully, I was able to get everything taken care of before my day officially started.  Shout out to the girls who helped me out! (You know who you are… wink wink! #SlaySquad)

After I was signed into the account and ready to go, I introduced everyone to my cat, Bella!  I got ready for the first activity and then made my glass of hot lemon water with cayenne pepper!

Around 6:00 am, I hit the road and headed towards our launch location for my very first hot air balloon ride!   I was so thankful to Christine, Jessica, and the Hearts a Fire Balloon crew who so graciously offered to take me up in a hot air balloon for New Mexico’s  snapchat takeover day!
The Balloon Fiesta is my all-time favorite event in Albuquerque! Being able to showcase our beautiful city from 3,500+ ft in the air was incredible.  We flew over the Rio Grande at sunrise and the entire morning was just perfect.  The weather was great, it was a gorgeous day, and everything was off to a wonderful start!

After our balloon ride, I had just enough time to swing by our Thursday morning office meeting at Coldwell Banker Legacy.  I was able to introduce everyone watching to my place of work, show them my office, and tell them how it really is working with mom!

Once I was done showing everyone around my work, I drove downtown and taped an interview with my most favorite radio host, Kiki Garcia with 93.3 KOB FM!   We had so much fun... like always!

This year, the 66th Miss USA will be crowned… so I thought it was appropriate to take a photo by the historic Route 66 sign!

After we were done with all the morning activities, I was STARVING!  We stopped at my favorite lunch spot in Albuquerque, Flying Star CafĂ©!   I ordered a salad and a breakfast burrito with “Christmas” because let’s be honest… I wouldn’t be doing New Mexico justice if I didn’t highlight a BB with both Red AND Green chile!!!

Once we were done with lunch, I came back to the house and shared a lot  about my blog, why I started it, what I talk about my blog, and why I titled it Sparkling from the Inside Out.  I also talked about writing daily gratitudes and affirmations.  This was probably the most special part of the day as I received so many heartfelt messages! There’s no better feeling than knowing you’ve inspired someone in some way!

While I was at home, I shared a few photos of my family and my best friend, Kristen!  My parents will be celebrating their 30th anniversary this August!

And here is a picture of Kristen and I! We met at kindergarten orientation.  This is a picture of us
at our kindergarten graduation and our high school graduation!

I took sometime to talk about Special Spaces and what the organizations means to me! I shared a couple of stories from my favorite room makeovers!

Of course, I couldn't leave out the fact that I've been competing for the title of Miss New Mexico USA for 8+ years!  I shared about my journey and my road to Miss USA.  Thankfully, I was able to share the moment all of my dreams came true! My crowning moment! In case you haven't seen it, click play below!

I also share that on top of working in real estate, finishing up my degree, and being Miss New Mexico USA, I also teach Spin, Barre, and Yoga!  I showed everyone a few videos from my classes and then headed to the park to do some yoga!

Around dinner time, I met up with my family at my favorite Mexican food restaurant, Zacatecas!  I’m slightly obsessed with tacos and I hadn’t had any in awhile so this was a treat for me!

We finished dinner with just enough time to grab a picture in front of the Breaking Bad house, then ran up to the foothills to take a quick picture of the sunset!

I had a few things on my list that I didn’t get to but since it was late in the evening, I decided to come home and show everyone how to make fresh juice with a juicer.  We did a little juicing 101 seminar which was so much fun for me.

I finished the night up with sharing a few of my favorite books, writing out thank you cards to everyone who helped with the entire day, and answering a few questions!

My Snapchat takeover was probably one of the most memorable and fun days of my life!  It’s days like this where I am just so beyond thankful for this experience!

I hope you enjoyed my recap of my Miss USA Snapchat takeover day!   Be sure and tune into FOX on May 14th for the big show… Miss USA that is!!!!

A Beginners Guide to Clean Eating

Kick Start Your New Year

Ah, good ole New Year’s resolutions are here! I know that some people think New Year’s resolutions are silly because they don’t typically last, but I personally love them! It’s a NEW YEAR… why shouldn’t we at least TRY?! Not to mention most of need to clean up our act after the holidays…. I know I’m extremely guilty of over indulging during the month of December.  It’s 2016 and it’s time to get cleaner and leaner… who’s with me?!

If you want to start eating clean but have no idea where to start (it can be intimidating) Here are a few healthy alternatives to give you an idea of where to start! Each one of these suggestions played a huge role in my 40lb weight loss and current weight management.  Consider this a grocery list for beginners, and a fantastic starting point!

Below you will find healthier alternatives to foods we are used to eating! The most important thing you can do when first starting to eat clean is READ THE LABELS on the back of EVERYTHING YOU BUY.  You want to be purchasing foods with very minimal ingredients.  The more natural the food is, the better!

Breads:
  • Ezekiel Bread- Found in the freezer section.  This is the only bread I buy now.  It’s clean, natural, and organic.  Not to mention, chemical free, easy to digest, has protein, lots of vitamins, is kosher, Non GMO, no refined sugars, no preservatives, no shortenings, and full of fiber.  It’s absolutely delicious! They also offer buns, cereals, muffins, tortillas, waffles, and more!

Grains:
White Flour is stripped of all nutrients which makes it an empty source of calories.  That’s not what we want! Here are few nutrient rich grains to add to your diet!

  • Quinoa- all kinds.  Quinoa is superfood that is PACKED with nutrients
  • Brown Rice
  • Wild Rice
  • Quinoa Pasta

Flours:
  • Coconut Flour (Naturally Gluten-Free)
  • Almond Flour (Naturally Gluten-Free and Low in Carb)

Dairy & Non Dairy:
I personally try to avoid dairy at all costs.  After doing a lot of research on the internet over the past few years I’ve come to learn that dairy isn’t necessary.  In fact, most of the population can’t properly digest dairy products.  I’ve cut out quite a few dairy products permanently and I have noticed a huge difference.

  • Almond Milk Yogurt (Non-Dairy)
  • Coconut Milk Yogurt (Non-Dairy)
  • Greek Yogurt
  • Unsweetened Almond Milk (Non-Dairy)
  • Unsweetened Coconut Milk (Non-Dairy)
  • Unsweetened Soy Milk (Make sure it’s Non-GMO)

Fruits:
  • Apples
  • Oranges
  • Grapefruits
  • All Berries
  • Bananas
  • Avocados
  • Pineapple
  • Any fresh fruit you like

Veggies:
  • Kale
  • Spinach
  • Broccoli
  • Celery
  • Tomatoes
  • Eggplant
  • Squash
  • Carrots
  • Celery
  • Bell Peppers
  • Zucchini
  • Sweet Potatoes
  • Onions
  • Green Beans
  • Any Fresh Veggies you like

Meats:
With every kind of meat, always opt organic or grass fed. Also, try and purchase the leanest meat possible.  If you buying lunch meat of any kind, look for nitrate-free!

  • Lean Ground Turkey
  • Chicken Breasts
  • Salmon, Tilapia, or other fish
  • Lean Ground Beef

Eggs:
  • Always purchase cage free.

Beans and Legumes:
If you are trying to eat healthy on a budget, beans are an excellent source of protein (especially if you are vegetarian or vegan)

  • Beans: Explore different kinds of beans.  Black, Pinto, Red Kidney, Red, Soybean, and More!
  • Legumes: You can make so many great meals with legumes.  They are excellent!

Other Grocery Store Items:

  • Oatmeal: Always buy plain steel cut oats. Nothing flavored due to the chemicals and sugar that they put in flavored oats.
  • Tea:  Any natural, organic, unsweetened tea is great!
  • Dry Beans and Legumes
  • Nuts: Always try and buy nuts that are organic.  Nuts are a fantastic snack filled with a ton of nutrients but you have to make sure you read the labels.  A lot of nuts that are sold in stores are loaded with sodium and sugar.
  • Bars:  I used to be a protein bar junkie.  Make sure you read the labels on the back of your protein or snack bars.  Most of them are filled with a lot of junk.  My personal favorite brand of health bars are Laura Bars… they are delicious, have minimal ingredients, and are very healthy and clean!
  • Condiments:  Most condiments are also loaded with a ton of junk that could be slowing down your weight loss.  When you can, avoid condiments or try and make your own using all natural fruits, veggies, and herbs.  If you have to purchase condiments from the store, look for the organic condiments with minimal ingredients and no added sugar.
  • Extra Virgin Olive Oil
  • Walnut Oil
  • Coconut Oil

Sweeteners:
Processed Sugar is the easiest way to pack on the pounds.  Here are few natural alternatives to sweeten things up.

  • Coconut Nectar
  • Honey
  • Maple Syrup
  • Agave

There are so many healthy alternatives out there today! It can be fun to search for new and exciting things in the grocery store.  I know that since I’ve made these changes, I’ve been a healthier, happier person! I want the same for you in 2016! Let’s make this our best year yet!

I would love to hear some of your favorite healthy alternatives! Leave a comment below with some of your health tips!

Wishing you the very best!

How to be Confident

How to be Confident
I AM
Confident
Passionate
Enthusiastic
Born with a Purpose

Confidence is the foundation for everything in life.  Whether you have a an interview for a new job, are going on a date, giving a presentation in class, or performing for an audience,  making your presence known and leaving a lasting impression with everyone you meet, is a powerful trait.  Having confidence makes your feel more valuable and ultimately leads to more success in EVERY aspect of your life!

There are so many people who live everyday with self-limiting beliefs.  No one controls your confidence but YOU, which means at any given time, you can become more confident… you can become the person you have always wanted to be.  Don’t settle for what is, strive for what could be!  You are a gift, meant to do great things on this earth. I hope by the end of this post you feel inspired and confident to take on the world!

Stop comparing yourself to others
“Comparison is the thief of joy.” -Theodore Roosevelt
We are each beautiful in our own unique way.  To spend one second comparing ourselves to someone else is unfair. There is a sense of freedom you get when you stop competing and start appreciating.  When you start comparing yourself to others, you start to lose confidence in yourself!  Don’t let anyone rob you of reaching your full potential.

Fake it till you make it.
One of my favorite quotes is, “change your thoughts, change your world.”  Our thoughts are much more powerful than we could ever imagine.  What we think is literally what we become.  Imitating confidence will not only trick everyone around you into thinking that you in fact confident, but it will also send signals from your brain to your body that you are confident! So stand up straight, hold your head up high, and put on a smile! Before you know it, everyone around you will think you are expert… including yourself!

Journal
I know journaling seems like a thing of the past, but I find it so important.  You don’t have to write long novels every single night, but try writing down the things that you accomplish every week.  It doesn’t have to be some grand gesture… maybe you turned down a cookie at the office this week and that made you proud! Write down anything that makes you feel accomplished.  Then, whenever you are feeling down or disappointed, look back in your journal.  Your frown will start to turn upside down!

Channel your favorite celebrity
When you find yourself feeling like you are in a less-than state of mind, think of a person who you admire!  The positive qualities that we look up to in our favorite celebrities not only empower us but they also push us to become the best version of ourselves we can possibly be! Take a second to think about someone who makes you want to be a better person, write down the qualities that attract you to them, and think of that person when you find yourself feeling nervous!

Stay Positive
I start each day with writing down 5 things I am grateful for.  There is something about starting your day with gratitude that really changes your perspective.  Being able to start your day with such an uplifting and positive outlook on life, sets you up for success!

Accept your mistakes
Mistakes are inevitable… the best thing you can do is move on!  Always remember… “Every setback is a setup for comeback!” And don't be so hard on yourself... a 90% is still an A!

Exercise
Elle Woods once said, “Exercise gives you endorphins.  Endorphins make you happy..”  and she was right! Working out makes you feel so much better!  When you feel good you, look good, and when you look good, you feel good!  Even if you can only workout 20 minutes a day, make it happen.  You will thank yourself later!

Love yourself
As I mentioned earlier, our thoughts are powerful.  They feed our soul, and nourish our body.  Make sure the energy you are sending yourself is positive. Thinking negative thoughts is just like eating junk food.  They start to poison us from the inside out.  The best way to change your thought process is to start writing daily affirmations.  I encourage you to spend the next 30 days writing something positive down, 10 times a day.  It can be anything you want… as long as it’s encouraging and celebrating you!

When we achieve self-confidence, we know who we are and appreciate ourselves for it.  I truly believe that once self-confidence is running through our veins, we start to make better choices and decisions in life.  Whether we like it or not, our confidence effects how we live and enjoy our life.    With dedication and determination… we can achieve ANYTHING!  Never let your will to succeed, die down!

Always do something to keep that fire in your belly burning!

This is your year to sparkle

As we close out 2014 and embrace a brand new year, I think it's important to talk about New Years resolutions. Why are they so important to us aside from the obvious desire of a fresh start? I believe that we make New Years resolutions each and every year because we want to make our dreams come true.  Whether your dream is to fit back into your "skinny jeans", run a marathon, become a healthier person, get a promotion at work, or finally make that big move you've always wanted to make, the time is now!  Whatever your goals may be, this is YOUR year to sparkle.  I believe that being successful, in anything we do in life, comes with working hard one day at a time.  What will you do differently this year that will make your dreams become your reality? This blog is my 2015 challenge to you!

Baby steps:
The optimum way to achieve your goals this year is by taking baby steps. Start by making small changes. When you start to make small changes everyday, you can build off of them little by little.  Before you know it, your small change will have become a HUGE change.  One reason that New Years resolutions are typically over by February 1st is because we bite off more than we can chew. We make unattainable goals, fail, and then revert back to old habits.  Let's say that in 2015 your goal is to become an overall healthier person.  Well, if you love pasta, bread, pizza, and burgers, cutting EVERYTHING out and going cold turkey is going to send you into a relapse.

What to do:
My best advice is to map out the year. Start by eliminating one bad thing from your diet, one month at a time. Let's say you want to limit your bread intake for example. In January, make a conscious decision to only eat gluten-free products. This way you won't feel deprived and you will still be able to enjoy all the bread and pasta your heart desires. Then in February, you may choose to limit the amount of gluten-free products you consume.  Each month, make a new goal while maintaining the resolution of the previous month.

Every diet works:
Did you know that every "diet" out there works?  Paleo, Atkins, Plant-Based, Herbalife, Weight Watchers, Juicing, etc.  The reason that so many people fail is because rather than adapting a new lifestyle and sticking with it, most are looking for a quick fix and when they don't see results after one week, they revert to their old habits and blame the diet.  We MUST change our way of thinking if we want results. You have to accept a new way of living and take baby steps over the next year in order to achieve your goals.

Plan for set backs:
With anything in life, and especially with weight loss, you are going to experience setbacks. It's an inevitable part of the process. One of my favorite quotes is "life is 10% what happens to you and 90% how you react to it".  For example, if you end up pigging out one night unexpectedly, don't let your cheat meal turn into a cheat week. So many people fall off the bandwagon and they are never able to get back up. Food and drugs are alike in so many ways.  Once you "relapse", it can be difficult and discouraging to start again.  I promise you that every change and sacrifice will be worth it. It's hard to see the big picture but this time next year, if you stick with making your baby steps and picking yourself up when you fall... You will be overjoyed on December 31st, 2015!

Make your dreams come to life:
Im a firm believer in keeping your visions in front of you at all times. Here are some fun ways you can constantly be reminded of your goals.

Write a letter to yourself, seal it, and open it next year.

Write a list of everything you want to accomplish. Hang it somewhere you can see it everyday.

Make a vision board or vision book.

Change your screen saver to something that inspires you.

Make encouraging music playlists.

Map out your year. Create mini goals. Example: I want to be ____ weight by March 1st. I want to lose another ___ pounds by June 1st. My total weight loss goal for 2015 is ______ .

Plan out your baby steps. Example: my overall goal is to start working out ______ times a week. In January, I will start going _____ times per week. In February, I will add one more day, so on and so forth.

Set up mini rewards. Every time you reach one of your goals, reward yourself with something that will make you happy. Maybe a new pair of jeans, maybe a new dress, or a fancy night out!

Celebrate yourself:
Whether or not 2014 was your year, don't forget to love yourself and show appreciation towards the things you did accomplish. This is not the time to beat yourself up about the things you did wrong, but rather to celebrate the fact that you have the ability to make a change!  There are so many people in the world that are physically and mentally unable to change their state of being due to illness, accidents, and other limitations.  It's so easy to forget how lucky and blessed we truly are.  Celebrate yourself and the changes you are about to embrace and then go out and share your success with the world!

Wishing you all in the best in 2015!

xoxo
