D-I-Y Detox

DIY (do it yourself) Detox

The idea idea of doing a juice detox can be intimidating.  You may or may not have thought to yourself, “ I want to juice but….Should I buy pre-made juice?  Should I make the juice myself? I don’t know if I want to buy a juicer… Do I eat anything or just drink juice?  How on earth am I suppose to go days on JUST juice… ok forget it!”

I completely understand that juicing can be overwhelming, expensive, and time consuming.  Today I am going to share my DIY detox.  This is my go-to plan when I’m too busy to make fresh juice myself.  Ordering cleanses can be pricey and this is the easiest, cheapest, and fastest way to put your own detox together which is why I consider it a DIY. I would say that this this a “mild” detox because I mix in smoothies and detox friendly foods.  This is great for beginners or those who have no desire to do a full on juice cleanse but want to jump start a healthier lifestyle.

 green smoothie

Start each morning with warm lemon water.  Use the juice of a fresh squeezed lemon.

Breakfast:  Green Detox Smoothie. 1 cup of water. 2-3 cups of spinach. 1 pear. 1 banana.  2 limes.

 Detox Smoothie

Snack:  Evolution’s Organic Spicy Lemonade.  Ingredients:  Lemon, Ginger, Cayenne Pepper.  If you are still hungry, have 1 Granny Smith Apple

Lunch:  Sweet Greens Evolution juice.  This brand can be purchased at: Starbucks, Whole Foods, Sprouts, Albertsons, & Natural Grocers. If one juice doesn't satisfy your hunger, feel free to drink another.  I recommend the sweet greens because It’s only 100 calories and loaded with detoxing fruits and veggies.  This juice also tastes good!  If you want to make your own juice, the ingredients are: Celery, Apple, Spinach, Kale, Lemon, Lime, Parsley, Romaine, & Cucumber.  OR Kale Yeah from Whole Foods

Snack:  Skinned cucumber slices soaked overnight in lemon juice, lightly salted (YUM!!)  You can have an unlimited amount of this snack.
Or a bowl of broccoli
Or a bowl of berries
Or a small handful of almonds

Dinner:  Evolution’s Essential Greens with Lime.  70 Calories.  Ingredients: Celery, Cucumber, Spinach, Romaine, Kale, Lime, Parsley.

Dessert:  (if needed) Evolution’s Organic Strawberry Lemonade.  Ingredients: Strawberries and Lemons OR Orange/Tangerine juice from Whole Foods.

Detox Bath: 1/2 cup of Sea Salt
                              1/2 cup of Epsom Salt
                              1/4 cup of Baking Soda
1/3 cup of Apple Cider Vinegar
A few drops of your favorite essential oil.  (before bed I like to use lavender)

Soak in bath for at least 25 minutes.  This salt bath will help pull out any remaining toxins.

P.S. Evolution juices range from $2.99 to $6.99 a for a 15.2oz bottle depending on the juice and distributor.  I am recommending evolution juices because they are sold in the biggest variety of grocery stores across the country.  Other brands that are sold in stores that would be an ok substitute would be SUJA & Blue Print.

If you live near a Whole Foods, I would recommend buying their brand of cold pressed juices because they are made fresh in stores.

If you want to make your own juices, check out the ingredients in each juice and you can duplicate the same recipes with your juicer.

Toxins are just a part of our daily lives which is why every now and then we need to detox and refresh our bodies with natural foods.  I hope that through this blog, you are able to do your very own detox and that it’s simple.  You will be amazed how great your body will feel afterwards!

My Top 3 Favorite Juice Cleanses

There are so many benefits to doing a juice cleanse! We take our cars for an oil change regularly, right?  I like to think of a juice cleanse as doing the same thing with my body.  Every now and then, we NEED to clean everything out.  A juice cleanse isn’t just for fast food addicts, it's for everyone.  We typically eat 3 meals a day with about 3 snacks.  It takes our bodies 18 hours to digest just one meal, which means that our digestive systems are working 24/7.  When you do a juice cleanse, you are giving your digestive system a much needed break! Typically, a juice cleanse is when you drink 6 fresh fruit and vegetable juices throughout the day.  I recommend that each juice is about 12-16 ounces, depending on the person.  A few of the benefits are: increased energy, regulated colon, repaired liver, better sleep, radiant complextion and hair, mental clarity, elimination of toxins, and weight loss.. just to name a few!

Juicing can get expensive so purchase produce yourself and make your own.  Fresh juice is going to be the least expensive way to go about doing a juice cleanse.  However, we don't always have time for that.  I have tried a few different juice cleanses and these are my top 3 favorite juice cleanse that you can purchase pre-made!

I can't say enough good things about this cleanse! On the website, you will read that Kimberly's cleanse is, "more than just a typical cleanse" which is so true!  Kimberly has everything down to a science and has carefully planned out each drink to "maximize the cleanse experience." This cleanse offers a variety of options from a one day cleanse, to a seven day cleanse, and everything in between.  You can also choose between a beginner level 1 or a master level 2 cleanse.  This cleanse starts and ends with a smoothie, which is one reason why I love this cleanse so much.  The smoothies keep you full and help push everything out of your system.  Each day you are given a total of 8 products all of which taste delicious! Glow Bio uses all organic produce in their cleanse and they send very thorough instructions which I found helpful!  The best thing about this particular cleanse is that it's easy.  You will not only feel a change in your body, but you will notice a difference too!  For more information on this cleanse or to order one for yourself, Click HERE.http://www.myglowbio.com

I stumbled across this juice bar while I was out of town in Phoenix, Arizona and I loved it! It's the cutest juice bar I have ever been to and they offer some really great products.  I ordered a 5 day juice cleanse from Nekter Juice Cleanse which I liked a lot.  This cleanse provides you with 6 products a day... all juices.  The last juice is a mix of cashew milk, vanilla bean, and cinnamon, which is a nice change and something to look forward to at the end of each day.  You also get a tasty lemonade in this cleanse that is to die for!  For more information on this cleanse or to order one for yourself, Click HERE. https://www.nekterjuicebar.com

#3 Squeezed Juice Bar Cleanse

I love going to squeezed in Albuquerque, New Mexico!  It's by far my favorite juice bar in town and they offer some really delicious recipes! There isn't anything too fancy about this cleanse like there is with the first two, but I still enjoy this cleanse a lot.  You are given 6 juices per day.  All 6 are fruit and vegetable juices.  The nice thing about this cleanse (for those who live in abq) is that you do not have to pay for shipping!  5 of the 6 juices are VERY tasty... almost too good to be true.  You will get a juice in your cleanse called super juice which in my opinion can be a little rough.  Some people love it, but it's not my cup of tea.  You can also customize your order if you don't like certain juices.  My favorite cold pressed juices from squeezed are replenish, liquid sunshine, sweet burn, fatigue fighter, green machine, and thrive! All of those juices get five stars in my book! For the address to Squeezed and for more information on their cleanse, Click HERE http://www.squeezedjuices.com

Other places to purchase juice on the go.
These are the juices that I give the ok to.  I always try and purchase juice as organic and fresh as possible.  Be careful when buying juice because the 100% juice label doesn't mean anything.  There is a difference between a marketing label and the ingredient list.  Read the ingredients on the label and if it says concentrated.. put it back!

The worst "juice" to buy is:
v8
Naked Juice
Zico
Odwalla
POM
Simple Orange
Bolthouse Farms
Tropicana
Ocean Spray
Minute Maid
Del Monte
Welch's

The best juice to buy:
Fresh Juice from a local juice bar
Whole Foods sells fresh cold press juice that they make in stores.  I have found their cold press juice to be the least expensive.  They offer a variety of juices.
Suja Juice (Health Food Stores, Sprouts, Whole Foods)
Suja Elements (Health Food Stores, Sprouts, Whole Foods)
Trader Joe's Cold Press Juice (Trader Joe's)

If you are new to juicing, I highly recommend starting off SLOW.  Start swapping out one meal or one snack a day with a juice.  Choose recipes that you will enjoy... if you hate vegetables, you won't be able to jump into a straight veggie juice right away.  If you are interest in purchasing a juicer, click HERE for the list of juicers I recommend.

If you need recipes for your own juice cleanse, click HERE for a list of 50+ Juice Recipes.

Since I started juicing, I have lost a total of 40 lbs and have never been healthier in my entire life! If you are skeptical... just give it a try! What do you have to lose? When you feel good on the inside, you look good on the outside, which is why I always say, "When you sparkle on the inside, you radiate on the outside!"

Keep Sparkling,
xoxo

17 Benefits of Juicing

17 Benefits of Juicing

Hello Everyone! As we approach a new month I thought I would share some of the most important benefits of juicing.  I am coming up on my one year anniversary of being an avid juicer (Yay!)  So… why not share some of what I’ve learned this past year!  The holidays will soon be upon us and it’s no lie that set backs are defeating… so beat them! This Wednesday (October 1st) is the perfect opportunity to start fresh and head into the holiday season with confidence that you will start your new year without feeling like you need to start over.  Who says that January 1st has to be the only day we make resolutions?! The truth is.. it doesn't! We only have 3 months left of 2014, lets make them count! End 2014 with a bang!

  1. Raw juices help remove chemicals that we store in our bodies.
  2. It helps cleanse out bacteria.
  3. Cleanses your blood.
  4. Juicing gives your digestive system a break & lord knows we can all use one of those!
  5. It allows you to add a wider variety of vegetables in your diet. You would not sit down and eat two apples, 1 cucumber, 3 celery stalks, and inch of ginger, a lemon, and 2 cups of kale.
  6. Juicing not only promotes but it also jump starts weight loss. Juicing rids your body of excess weight. It can provide a way to reach a dramatic weight loss goal.
  7. Increases energy.  When you start to add rich nutrients into your body you wont feel so tired and sluggish.
  8. Helps boost your immune system.
  9. It can help you ease into a healthier lifestyle.
  10. Our bodies require a certain amount of nutrients from fruits and vegetables.  Juicing not only provides us a way to get those vegetables down but the juice is immediately absorbed into our blood stream making those nutrients we are consuming, more efficient.
  11. Can assist in helping you de-bloat naturally.
  12. Curbs appetite.  Yep, you heard me! All of the nutrients that are filled in one glass of juice make you feel full!
  13. Juicing is great for your skin, hair, and nails.
  14. Mental alertness and happiness.  Juicing improves blood circulation therefore it transports oxygen into the brain and body keeping you from hitting that 3 o'clock feeling.
  15. Full of antioxidants!
  16.  Keeps your cells hydrated.  Juicing replenishes nutrient rich fluid back into our bodies.
  17. Juicing truly is a Fat Flusher.

Green Drinks are Not For Me!

If you are the kind of person who looks at a green drink and thinks to yourself that you would never be “into that” I highly recommend just TRYING it out.  I personally hate vegetables.  I wish that wasn’t the case, but unfortunately it is.  There is something so magical about being able to blend up broccoli, spinach, kale, celery, cucumber etc. toss in some apples, oranges, strawberries and have them mask the nasty taste of the green! Juicing is all about finding the right combinations of different fruits and vegetables that work for you!

Quick Green Juice Recipes:

2 Medium Apples
4 Celery Stalks
1 Cucumber
1 inch of Ginger Root

1 cucumber
1 pear
1 gala apple

De-Bloat

Simple One Day Revitalizing Cleanse

"Motivate the mind; the body will follow"
Happy Monday Everyone!  With August coming to an end, I thought I would share my Simple One Day Revitalizing Cleanse because it has been my saving grace with all the traveling I have done this summer.
When your energy is low, your stressed out, your anxiety levels are high, your unhappy with how you look which in return affects how you feel.... Your body is SCREAMING FOR A CLEANSE!

Cleansing can be intimidating.  The idea of not eating solid foods for days is frightening, I know.  Some people may even think it's stupid...  some may think all of this trendy juicing is just another fad.  While it is in fact "trendy" right now, juicing has been around for ages.  There are a lot of people who have been avid juicers for a very long time.  The thing is, the way food is designed in today's society (processed, chemically designed to last for years, loaded with sugar and salt... the list goes on and on.) We NEED to "clean out our pipes" from time to time and rid our bodies of all the harmful chemicals we feed it on a daily basis.

Cleansing is important because it purifies the body and the mind.  Think of a cleanse as a mini retreat.  It gives you the opportunity to step back and take a look at the things you're consuming because so much of what we put into our bodies, weighs us down.  Cleansing, fortunately can set us free from all of that!  What you eat, affects every single aspect of your life.

So now, you may be wondering how to even get started.  It's important to be prepared when you are about to start a cleanse.  Here is a list of things to do before jumping into a cleanse:
  1. Make a list of your favorite recipes that you will use.
  2. Make a shopping list and purchase all the necessary fruits and veggies you will need. (I recommend going to the Farmers Market so you are not tempted by other foods at the grocery store)
  3. Ask a friend to join you.  I recently did a 3 day cleanse with two of my friends.  We all live in different cities but we would text each other throughout the day in a group message just to check in and see how we were all doing.  We would also send each other pictures of the juices we were drinking and share recipes.
  4. Let your family know.  If you have a spouse or live with other people, let them know that you are getting ready to do a cleanse.  It's important for them to support you.  The last thing you need is your husband going to town on a cheeseburger while your sitting in the same room sipping on a juice.
  5. Write down a list of 5 reasons you need to do a cleanse and keep it with you.  It's important to maintain a positive attitude.  In moments of weakness it's easy to give up and give in but if you stay strong, you will feel so empowered!

The Simple One Day Revitalizing Cleanse was designed for when I  have too much of a good thing over the weekend.  Whenever I would come back from a trip, even if I tried to eat healthy, I would always feel bloated and out of shape upon returning.  Sometimes you just throw your hands up and say to yourself, "Enough!"  This cleanse is about devoting 24 hours to your health.  It gives you the chance to start over and clean everything out.  This cleanse can be used to ease yourself into another (longer) cleanse, or you can use it as a weekly routine maintenance, which is what I do.  Just think of how we take our cars for oil changes... we need to take care of our bodies the same way!

With all that being said... Drum Roll Please! I now give you the step by step instructions for the

Simple One Day Revitalizing Cleanse.
  • Upon waking:  Sip on some Lemon Ginger water or just Lemon Water
  • Breakfast:  20oz Green Juice (de-bloat recipe)
  • One hour after to breakfast:  1 Cup of Detox Tea
  • Snack:  8oz Green Juice with 12 almonds (de-bloat recipe)
  • Lunch:  20oz Beet Juice (digestion recipe)
  • One hour after lunch:  1 large glass of lemon water
  • Snack:  1 Banana or 1 Avocado
  • Dinner:  Either 1 fresh veggie juice or 1 fresh all natural soup.  You can make homemade veggie soups with your juicer.  (weight-loss recipe)
  • Post Dinner:  1 Cup of Detox Tea
  • Take a Detox Bath

To enhance your cleanse, make sure you get a good nights rest the night before you start and the night of.  Sweating will also assist getting those toxins out of your body.  If you can, you should squeeze in the time to either go to a hot yoga class or sit in a sauna.

Well, there you have it! I hope you enjoy this simple cleanse and that you take some time for YOU!  If you need recipes for anything mentioned in the list above, keep scrolling down! I have recipes for everything you will need!

Total 3-Day Detox

"Let food be thy medicine and medicine thy food." -Hippocrates

Every few months it's important to take a few days and cleanse your mind and body. We all need it!  Toxins are everywhere... they are in the air we breathe, the food we eat, cleaning products we use... the list goes on and on.  Stress, anxiety, & negativity, also release toxins within our bodies.  It's impossible to live toxin-free, that is why it is so important to take the time to detox.  Every few months I like to follow these seven steps in order to detox my mind & body.  The length of my detox always varies.  It can be as short as 3 days or as long as 7.  You can make it however long you would like but if you are new to juicing I would recommend starting off slow!

Things to avoid while detoxing:

Solid Foods
Coffee
Sodas
Bottled Drinks
Alcohol
Gum
Smoking

What to Take in while Detoxing:

Fresh Juices without pulp
Water
Detox Tea
Hot Lemon Water

Step One:  Prepare for a Juice Detox.  Try and purchase organic produce while detoxing.  It will help aid the entire process.  I typically drink 6 16oz fresh juices a day during a detox.  I make all of my juices with a Breville Juicer (Not a smoothie maker) and I store the juice in mason jars.

Step Two: Drink lots and lots of Hot Lemon Water.  There are so many amazing benefits to drinking hot lemon water especially while detoxing! Here are Few of them:

  • Aids Digestion
  • Better than Coffee
  • Clearer Skin
  • Weight loss Aid
  • Natural Diuretic
  • Balances PH levels
  • Boots Immune System
  • Helps purify and Stimulate the Liver
  • Flushes Unwanted Materials
  • During a juice detox, lemon water helps dissolve mucus and toxins from our cellular tissue!!!

Step 3:  Drink two cups of Detox tea a day when detoxing.  I prefer the Yogi tea... You can purchase it at almost every grocery store.  This tea is fantastic! Perfect for when you've had too much of a good thing over the weekend.  I especially love drinking it when I'm detoxing.

Step 4:  Take a Detox Bath.  This is personally one of my favorite steps! A friend of mind by the name of Kylie turned me onto this detox bath recipe and I ALWAYS incorporate into my detox process now. Make a relaxing playlist, light some candles, add some rose pedals and enjoy! Go all out... You deserve it!

  • Set aside 40 minutes of your day for your bath (The first 20 minutes are for detoxing, the second 20 are for absorbing all of the minerals in the water)
  • 2 cups of Epsom Salt
  • 2 or more cups of Baking Soda
  • 3 pints of Hydrogen Peroxide
  • 2 ounces of Ground Ginger (or Ginger Tea Bags for less of a mess)
  • Tea Tree Oil ( I recommend using a small amount of Tea Tree Oil.. it can burn if you put too much)

Step 5:  Take a break from the internet.  This is such an important step and it's so nice to do this every once in awhile! Spend the time you're detoxing, reflecting on things you are most thankful for in life!

Step 6:  Write down 5 positive affirmations every morning and every night.  Take this time to reflect on your life.  The things you are thankful for, the things you want to succeed in, your goals, and your ambitions.  We are surrounded by so many beautiful blessings and sometimes we get distracted by our never ending to-do lists.  It's easy to take the small things for granted so use this time reflect and most importantly take this time for yourself.

Step 7:  Relax your mind and meditate.  Spend a little extra time over these next few days praying, and quieting your mind.  Like I said earlier, toxins do not only come from bad food and cleaning products, They also come from stress and anxiety.  Take a hot yoga class, or before bed spend some time in a peaceful room alone reflecting on your life and the things you are most thankful for! It will make all the difference in the world.

And there you have it! All the necessary step to a successful 3-Day Detox. Hope you all enjoyed this blog!

Juicing on a Budget

Squeeze the Most Out of Every Dollar!

There is a little rumor going around that juicing is outrageously expensive.  Can it be pricey? Well, yes of course it can be... but it doesn't have to be! There are ways to squeeze the most out of every dollar when it comes to purchasing produce.

Here are my 10 tips on how to juice on budget!
  1. Purchase produce that has a high water content. Fruits and Vegetables that have a high water content tend to produce a lot more juice.  This weekend I juiced 1 medium sized watermelon and it made 6 16oz jars of juice.  Some other items that juice well are cucumbers, celery, apples, pears, and lemons.
  2. Cut back on the berries.  They don't produce a lot of juice and they are expensive.
  3. Purchase your produce at a farmers market.  You can also save money by buying in bulk at places like Sam's Club or Costco.  They are now starting to offer organic produce.
  4. Buy produce that is in season. Produce that is in season typically costs less and is usually on sale.
  5. Purchase a mint leaf plant (I got mine at Walmart)  I use a lot of mint leaves in my juices and the containers at the store can be pricey.
  6. Plan ahead.  It's easy to get excited when you go the grocery store but if you make a list ahead of time and stick to it, you can cut down the cost of your grocery bill.
  7. Grow Your Own Garden. I by no means have a green thumb but you can save a lot of money growing your own produce.
  8. If your produce is about to go bad, juice it and then throw it in the freezer.  You can preserve the juice for a few weeks in the freezer without it going bad.
  9. Keep your produce in the refrigerator, it will help preserve the life of your produce.
  10. Stretch Juice out with sparkling water, coconut water, or ice cubes! It's very tasty and if you like carbonated drinks like diet coke, sparkling water is a great substitution.

 Low Budget Recipes
Recipes with minimal ingredients are typically less expenisive.  If you are a new juicer, these might not be the greatest juices to start off with because they are not as tasty as the recipes with a bunch of fruit. Check out my 50+ juicing recipes post for more creative ideas!

Juice for $1.35 per Glass
1 Beet, 3 apples, 1 lemon
Juice for $1.65 per Glass
15 carrots
8 Celery Stalks
2 Apples
Juice for 1.45 per Glass
2 1/2 Cups of Kale
3 Apples
1 Lemon
Juice for $1.30 per Glass
10 Carrots
2 Apples
Inch of Ginger Root
Juice for $1.30 per Glass
1 Beet
1/4 Watermelon
Juice for $1.25 per Glass
2 1/2 cups of Spinach
3 Apples
1 Lemon

*** A Few Things to Keep in Mind***

We invest a lot of our time, money, and energy into things like clothes, shoes, an apartment, maybe a house, a car.... the list goes on and on.  The majority of the time our health is something we put on the back burner because we get so caught up in life.  When you start juicing, consider it an investment for your own health.  Just like with clothes, usually the more expensive the shirt, the better quality it is.  Food works the same way and it is SO important to always remember "benefits over cost" and I truly believe that juicing is one of the best ways to maintaining a healthy lifestyle!

If you enjoyed this blog you might want to take a little look at "How To Get The Most Out Of Juicing" which will also help with juicing costs and my "50+ Juicing Recipes" blogs.

Much love,

How to Store Juice

Happy Monday and Happy June! It officially feels like summer.. Woo Hoo!

One of the most frequently asked questions I receive is... "How long can I store my juice?"  Making fresh juice can be extremely time consuming and tedious (especially in the beginning... it gets better the more you do it, I promise) ...  If you are anything like me (busy busy busy) going thru the juicing process everyday is pretty much out of the question.  I simply just don't have the time for it, which is why making juice in advance is a must!

If you do some research online you will almost always read that the beneficial nutrients in juice are dissipated after just a few hours and that juice is best when consumed within the first 24 hours.  While this is true... juice does in fact have the most nutrient value within the first day, you can still drink juice after the first 24 hours and get some of the benefits... you just have to store it the proper way!

Tips for Longer Lasting Juice

  1. NEVER leave juice unopened (i.e in a cup with no lid)  The more air that hits the juice, the more the nutrient value drops. You should never allow your juice to become warm.
  2. Never leave at room temperature.  Juice stays fresh longer when cold.  I just recently bought an Igloo cooler back pack that I take with me EVERYWHERE.  I have re-freezable ice cubes that I throw in my backpack every morning along with jars of juice and I take that baby with me in the car, to work, to the gym... literally everywhere.  It keeps my juice ice cold and it helps me stay on track with eating healthy all day.

  3. Pour juice you don't plan on drinking right away in an airtight sealed container.  I like to use Mason Jars for several different reasons.  They are the best airtight sealed jars I've used, they are portable, easy to clean, and I have yet to break one... which is pretty amazing for me.  I have dropped one on concrete and it didn't break.. pretty impressive if you ask me!
  4.  Add extra lemon juice to preserve juice.
  5. Place your produce in the fridge.  Using fruit that is already cold will significantly help keep your juice fresh for a longer time period.
  6. Freeze your juice for long term storage.  If you know that you aren't going to be drinking the juice you made for several days, you can freeze it and it will stay good until you are ready to defrost it.  You can also do this so your juice will stay cold throughout the day, usually by lunch time your juice will be ready to drink.

***WARNING***

When your juice starts to change in color, smell, and taste... It's starting to go bad! I have personally stored juice up to 5 days and have not had any problems.  With that being said, a lot of juicing is trial and error.  Watermelon for example goes bad within a day and I have never been able to drink it after the first 12 hours.  So just be cautious when storing juice!

With this week being the 1st week of June I just wanted to encourage you all to make the most out of your summer!  Make it your healthiest summer yet... You deserve to have the body you've always dreamed of! I know earlier I talked about being busy which most of us are but your first appointment of the day should always be with yourself.  It takes 4 weeks for you to start seeing changes in your body, it takes 8 weeks for friends and family to start seeing changes, and it takes 12 weeks for the rest of the world.  Once you start seeing results it  becomes an addiction!

I received these pictures last week from two people who have started juicing since I started my blog and was completely inspired!  I am so glad that I can be a small part of other people's journey!

And here's a little transformation picture of my own!

Have a blessed week everyone! Much love to you all! If you post a picture of your juice, tag me! I love seeing all the photos!
